But it is not the right tool for most businesses.

The complexity was too much for what I actually needed. I was using maybe 30% of what I was paying for. The real reasons people leave:
Cost that grows too fast. ActiveCampaign’s pricing is based on contact count. As your list grows, your bill grows — sometimes suddenly. At 10,000 contacts on the Plus plan, you’re paying $139/month. At 25,000 you’re at $299/month. For many businesses, that growth in cost is not matched by a growth in the value they’re actually using.
Too complex for what they need. ActiveCampaign is built for businesses with complex customer journeys. If you’re sending a weekly newsletter, a welcome sequence, and an occasional promotional email — the complexity of ActiveCampaign is unnecessary overhead.
The unsubscribed contact billing trap. Since November 2025, ActiveCampaign charges for all contacts including unsubscribed ones. This is the same problem that drives people away from Mailchimp. Your bill grows even as your active audience stays the same.
The learning curve never ends. Even after months of use, ActiveCampaign regularly presents new complexity. New features, new settings, new configurations. For a small team without a dedicated marketing ops person — this is a real drain.

The landing page builder surprised me. Brevo was the second alternative I ran my own campaigns through. I imported a list of 8,400 contacts and set up three automation flows — a welcome sequence, a re-engagement campaign, and an abandoned cart flow for a Shopify test store.
The single biggest surprise: the multi-channel automation. On ActiveCampaign, combining email and SMS in one automation requires an SMS add-on and additional per-message costs. The automation builder is solid for the most common workflows. If/else branching, time delays, behavioral triggers based on email opens and link clicks, website behavior triggers, lead scoring — all present and functional. Where it falls short compared to ActiveCampaign is in the depth of conditional logic for very complex multi-path journeys. My three flows ran perfectly. A 20-branch customer journey with dynamic content and CRM updates would start showing Brevo’s limitations.
The built-in CRM was genuinely useful. I did not expect to use it for this test — but tracking deals and managing contact pipeline without paying for a separate CRM tool was a real time-saver for the smaller campaigns I was running.
Something Important That Changed in 2025
In mid-2025, Brevo moved landing pages and pop-up forms to the Business plan ($18/month) — they had previously been available on Starter. If landing pages and pop-ups are central to your list-building strategy, budget for Business rather than Starter.

Moosend was the tool that genuinely surprised me most in this entire testing process.
I went in expecting a budget tool with budget-level features. What I found was a platform that matched ActiveCampaign on the features I actually used in my campaigns — lead scoring, behavioral triggers, AI send time optimization, real-time reporting with click maps — for $9/month.
Not $9/month to access watered-down versions of those features. $9/month for the actual full versions, with everything on one plan, no tiering.
What I Found When I Tested It
I built four different automation flows during my Moosend testing period. A welcome sequence, a lead nurturing series with conditional branching, a post-purchase follow-up with cross-sell recommendations, and a win-back campaign for cold subscribers.
All four ran without issues. The visual builder puts everything on one canvas. Steps drag. Conditions are set by clicking a dropdown. Adding a branch takes about ten seconds. It is not as deep as ActiveCampaign — the branching logic is simpler and the number of trigger types is smaller — but it covered every workflow I actually needed.
What genuinely impressed me: the AI-powered audience discovery. Moosend automatically identifies new audience segments based on how subscribers behave — without you manually setting segment rules. When someone hit 15 points, a targeted sales sequence started automatically. On ActiveCampaign this requires the Plus plan at $49/month. On Moosend it is included at $9/month.
What Moosend Does Not Do
Moosend does not have SMS marketing. There is no built-in CRM. The template library is smaller than ActiveCampaign. The integrations list is shorter. The community and third-party resources are much smaller — when I had an unusual workflow question, I could not find a tutorial and had to contact support directly.
For businesses coming from ActiveCampaign specifically because of the CRM — Moosend is not the answer. Brevo or HubSpot is a better fit.

Kit is a special case on this alternatives list. The paid plans are more expensive than most options here — $39/month for 1,000 subscribers compared to ActiveCampaign’s $15/month on the Starter plan. So in one narrow sense, Kit is not “cheaper” than ActiveCampaign.
But here is where the comparison breaks: the free plan. Kit gives you 10,000 subscribers with unlimited sends, unlimited landing pages, and basic digital product sales for $0. ActiveCampaign gives you 14 days and then charges you. For creators building their audience from scratch — Kit’s free plan is the most extraordinary deal in email marketing.
What I Found When I Tested It
I moved a creator client’s list from ActiveCampaign to Kit’s free plan during testing. The list was 4,200 subscribers. She had been paying $49/month on ActiveCampaign’s Plus plan.
